Isla applied to study Law at RGU through Clearing after regretting her initial choices on UCAS. She shares how easy the application process was for her and what her experience has been like at RGU so far.

Why did you choose to apply through Clearing, and why RGU?

I always wanted to study Law for as long as I can remember. However, I never thought I’d be able to get the grades needed to study it. So, instead, I applied for other universities doing a different course. But when results day came around, I knew that Law was the subject I was passionate about and wanted to study.

I was looking at the different courses available at different universities across Scotland and RGU stood out to me due to its graduate employment levels, teaching satisfaction and student services available such as the free RGU SPORT gym membership. RGU is also a modern campus located next to the River Dee with beautiful views.

What was the Clearing experience like?

There is so much uncertainty around Clearing, especially shared on social media sites. This makes people worry about the whole experience and overthink it.

Clearing at RGU is one of the easiest experiences I’ve ever had. I would even say it’s easier than the initial UCAS application process. RGU’s website sets out clearly what courses are included in Clearing, which helps to make a decision.

On results day, I made sure to have my grades written down with other information needed (phone number, address, postcode, clearing number). This made it easier as I could see this information right in front of me.

I rang up the Clearing line when it opened at 9am and got put through straight away. Half an hour later, I had the offer and my place confirmed in my email. Clearing with RGU was such an easy experience and I can’t recommend it enough.

Remember that Clearing is always an option available and there are so many resources to help make the whole process run smoothly.

How are you settling in now?

Choosing RGU is one of the best decisions I’ve made. I wasn’t sure how I would do coming to university a year early or how I was going to fit in with my peers.

Pre-moving to university, there are resources to help it feel more manageable. The University is included in an app called UNIBUDDY which allows you to speak to your classmates ahead of time. I met one of my closest friends on this app. It was so nice to talk to someone who also had the same questions and concerns.

Everyone at RGU is so friendly and I’ve managed to meet a good group of friends who share the same interests. There are many societies and clubs you could join to meet new people too via the Union.

How is life at RGU?

Studying at RGU allows for students to have a great study/life balance. There are so many spots on campus to allow you to socialise and study with friends. The location of the campus is so accessible with the buses or by foot.

There is so much to do in Aberdeen you will never find yourself bored. The city has so many different retail shops, grocery stores and amenities. While Aberdeen is a city, it still holds that small town charm as well.

Starting university can be a difficult time; however everyone at RGU is so friendly and always willing to answer your questions or concerns, whether that be your lecturers, personal tutors, the Inclusion Centre, or all the other members of staff who work here.

There is a wide range of societies meaning there is something for everyone. You will find the time goes by so fast from starting in September. It is totally okay to feel homesick as so many other do, but remember that everyone you are surrounded by is in the same boat and speaking to others makes you feel much more at ease.
