Fashion Management student Rachel shares her experience in the RGU Motorsport Society and the benefits it has provided her.

When I started my Fashion Management degree at RGU over three years ago, I never imagined I’d be writing about Motorsport, Cars and Engineering for the student blog, but I am more than happy to be doing so…

Being part of the RGU’s Formula Student Entry team

Hi, my name is Rachel, and I am currently the Communications Officer for the RGU Motorsport Society. An academic society, based within the School of Computing, Engineering and Technology, our team is divided into two key sub-sections.

One side of our society is focused on the renovation of a Formula Ford car, offering hands-on experience in the restoration and maintenance of a real race car, whilst the other team is dedicated to RGU’s Formula Student entry, where I am currently a member of the Business Team!

Formula Student is an international engineering competition, in which teams, such as ours at RGU, spend the year designing, building and marketing a single-seater formula-style race car, all in preparation for presentation and judging at the yearly Silverstone event.

Whilst I was unable to attend this year’s competition, and experienced severe FOMO as a result – the team were delighted to return, finishing 19th in the concept class category. It’s super exciting to be part of such a well-known competition, and it’s so rewarding to contribute to something so big within the engineering community.

The benefits of being part of a society like RGU Motorsport

Having been a member of the society since Fresher’s Fayre during my first week, I have been lucky enough to undertake a variety of roles, some within my degree discipline and some a little more challenging, and I think that’s my favourite thing about being part of the RGU Motorsport Society.

Before joining the University, I had no idea the society even existed, let alone understood that it could be the perfect place for a Fashion student. With, unsurprisingly, a love for Formula One, being a member of the team has allowed me to bring my focus to something completely different from my studies, and meet like-minded individuals, who I would never have had the chance to meet within my degree.

Joining the RGU Motorsport Society has been one of the best decisions I’ve made during my time at university, even though I may not have said that whilst screwing bolts onto our Formula Ford in my second year… And it has grown to become one of the most enjoyable, and memorable experiences about my time at RGU.
