Master’s student in Advancing Healthcare Practice Decency shares how the course is helping him develop professionally as a critical care staff nurse and some of his achievements so far.
Taking on the challenge of postgraduate education
As a full-time critical care staff nurse, I applied to RGU with a blend of anticipation and doubt. The prospects of advanced practice excited me, but I also questioned my ability to succeed at this level. The rigorous curriculum, combined with the challenge of balancing clinical practice and coursework, seemed daunting. However, as I progressed through the first year and completed several modules, I began to notice a remarkable transformation in both my professional practice and personal development.
At the start of the course, I struggled with the advanced concepts presented in the Leadership for Advancing Practice module. The depth and complexity of the material were overwhelming, and after my exam, I received an E, meaning I had to repeat the module, and this was my last opportunity.
I began questioning my decision to pursue further education. However, the support from my one-to-one meeting with my module coordinator encouraged me to persevere. Through late-night studies, discussion with colleagues who had previously completed the module, and consistent effort, I gradually started grasping the intricate details of applying what I had learned in practice when developing my essay. After the reassessment, I achieved a B grade and my subsequent modules I excelled on my first attempt.
Being empowered in my work with new knowledge
One significant turning point came during one of my shifts. Equipped with new knowledge from the Professional Contexts in Advancing Practice module, I began to critically evaluate the infusion-line change protocol used in the unit. I noticed that newly employed registered nurses often struggle to remember when infusion lines needed changing. Although part of the protocol was available in a booklet, I saw an opportunity for improvement.
I initiated a discussion with the quality improvement team and suggested integrating the protocol into the unit software, making it easily accessible on the computer. My proactive approach in this situation and how it was received boosted my confidence in my ability to make meaningful contributions to healthcare.
Reflecting on a transforming journey
Despite the challenges, my academic journey has been incredibly rewarding. Mentorship from experienced colleagues has played a crucial role in my development. Their encouragement and belief in my potential has helped me overcome self-doubt and push my boundaries. I have learnt that setbacks are part of the learning process and that resilience is key to personal growth.
The modules I completed have not only enhanced my clinical skills but also transformed my mindset. I am now more confident, knowledgeable, prepared to take on greater responsibilities. My grades have improved, and I have developed a passion for areas in nursing that I previously found intimidating.
This journey has taught me the value of perseverance, the importance of mentorship, and the power of education in transforming lives. I am excited about the future and eager to continue my studies, knowing I am on the right path. The changes I have seen in my practice are just the beginning, and I am confident that the skills and knowledge I will gain as I go through the course will continue to shape my career and personal growth.
